It’s really about YOUR journey, to heal-thy Self…
Do you ever experience any of the following?
Frustrated? With all the conflicting information about health and wellness…
Confused? Due to the overwhelming information out there on health and wellness…
Annoyed? That even though you feel that you and your family eat pretty healthy, and you feel you make reasonably healthy choices, you go to the gym (either presently or in the past), and have a lifestyle that you consider to be a pretty healthy one, that you STILL find that you don’t feel WELL. And instead you maybe feel some of the following symptoms: constantly feel tired/feel lethargic a lot of the time; find it hard to lose weight around the mid-rif (belly, bum and thighs); find it difficult to get motivated to be more physically active; find it hard to concentrate; suffer with allergies, mild ailments, or still fall prey to flu or other bugs that come around; or perhaps you are suffering from other or more serious health conditions…
Despondent? Due to not having your health in better control and feeling like you just can’t find the answers you are looking for. Perhaps because you are: dealing with old (or new injuries); feeling and dealing with pain on a daily basis (or off and on pain); feeling like you can’t shift what you know is unhealthy weight; and or suffering with one or more health concerns…
Defeated? Due to feeling like you really do try so many things but most of the time they just leave you feeling even more frustrated, confused, annoyed and despondent…
So how do we overcome these experiences and take back control of our health?

♥ I just love researching and finding the most eye-opening and, what I believe to be, extremely important, health-related information.
Health-related information that impacts all our lives on so many different levels. I simply love learning and really enjoy doing research. I love cross referencing everything I read. I love getting to the source of things.
♥ I also really enjoy problem solving: I love finding ways to combine empowering information with seriously delicious food and real-world solutions.
Being able to enjoying life as well as great tasting food, while improving health and wellness is top priority. It’s important that our journey toward better health be an enjoyable and delicious experience for our loved ones too so that they too can benefit and also not be resistant to the changes you want to make. That’s why I believe being healthy should be gentle, yummy and nurturing.
♥ I love finding useful tips and practical solutions to take what I have learned and put it into action.
I love finding ways of improving my and my family’s health and embodying a more loving and wholesome way of living by trying out many different healthy habits, and discovering, developing and eating the healthiest, yummiest recipes I can.

The 3 ways I ‘dish up’ information for you to enjoy:
1. Yummy Recipes.
Seeing as most of my research leads back to encouraging the addition of more high quality, organic, nutrition packed, plant-based, whole-foods to help you create optimal health, there is nothing more motivating to us and our families, than delicious recipes designed to encourage you and your family to fall in love (or continue your love-affair!) with more of those kinds of foods.
2. Blog Posts.
Quick reads, with a simple overview of important info, actionable tips, how to guides and useful solutions. These link to more in-depth and detailed articles on the subject.
3. More In-Depth, Detailed (and Well-Referenced) Articles.
For those of you who love to read more detailed explanations/information in order to gain a deeper understanding of the subject being written about. I share references of all the fantastic, credible sources of information I use, in order to help you quickly and easily to do your own research if that’s what you enjoy doing. I just love researching – hence the birth of Fresh Life Journeys in the first place!
Fresh Life Journeys could become one of your favourite health and wellness resources!
Why? Because I believe we are now, more than ever before, craving real knowledge. Sure we want quick, bite-size bits of information which are quick and easy to understand, served up with a side of real life solutions, tips and recipes, but we also want to know more. We want real, in-depth knowledge. And we are also way more savvy about where that information is coming from. We want to know where the facts can be found. Where are the studies to prove it? We want to hear from people who have experienced it. We want credible sources of information. We want only the passionate individuals and experts who are living examples of health and wellness. We’ll only listen to and trust the ones who walk their talk. There’s no pulling the wool over our eyes anymore!
Why? Because we have learnt that, although there are a great many fantastic professionals and experts out there, there are just as many that give the good ones a bad name! The bad ones let us down. They exist in the industries that are supposed to be helping us live long and happy lives. A great number of these so-called ‘highly educated’, ‘highly qualified’ individuals who are supposed to be helping us achieve optimal health are failing. Dismally. And what makes things worse is that some of these individuals are AWARE of the mis-information, and poor practices that are contributing to the downfall of our overall health. Aren’t they the ones who are supposed to be passionately and consistently defending our health? Aren’t they all supposed to be constantly improving their knowledge? Aren’t they supposed to care? Indeed, I think there are many who feel their hands are tied by the very industries they work in. And another great many who couldn’t care less. We must however remember and pay tribute to the great many incredible Professionals who are leading the way, showing us how to create our best health ever, but we understand that there are always exceptions to the rule, and unfortunately for us, there are too many of the wrong kind of Professionals around these days. So how do we know who to listen to? How do we know which ones have our best health at heart? By becoming “Expert Patients”, “Expert Clients”, and “Expert Consumers.” And we become so, when we take our power back. And we do that, by pursuing knowledge.
Why? To understand our health better for ourselves and take our power back by becoming informed. Real knowledge gives us the ability to decide just how qualified an expert or professional really is. Gone are the days of us blindly believing and putting our trust in anyone with a title, a degree or letters behind their names. We start to recognise those that go above and beyond there qualifications, and live true health. You can feel it in your heart and your soul when you are talking to someone who really cares and who lives there passion. You can tell the ones that are the epitome of health and wellness, the ones who practices what they preach (or prescribe… or in fact, don’t prescribe!!!).
Why? Because when we understand our bodies better, we become more in control of our health. When we know how our body functions, understand how they work, and how they need to be treated, nourished and looked after, we start to become control of our health. We become effective, positive contributors to our own optimal health rather than our own worst (health) enemy! We get back the control we were naturally given at birth, and true health, wellness, happiness and longevity become a reality.
Why? Because no one on this earth will ever be able to look after you as well as you can. There is no one who will care as deeply for you. No one who could ever know our body better than yourself. And most importantly, no one that will have a greater capacity to love and care for you as well as you can for yourself. It is a gift that only you can give yourself and indeed, when you give it to yourself, you invariably give that gift to those you love and those that are around you. The greatest gift you will ever give AND receive all at the same time.
What else can you tell me about this blog?
What are Sam’s Fresh Life Journeys all about?
This blog is an unbridled window into my daily life, which shares my constant pursuit of all things good for me, good for my family and friends, and good for the planet. It is all about loving wholesome living!
“Fresh Life Journeys explores all that is nourishing, wholesome, inspiring, positive and healing about this life.”
It’s about trying out/experimenting and experiencing better ways to nourish body, mind and soul.
It’s about sharing simple solutions, easy and great tasting healthy recipes, useful ideas and beneficial alternatives I discover, which are inspired by the research and information I find.
It’s about sharing genuine experiences, and if those experiences are interesting, useful, nurturing and valuable to others, I will share it here with you.
It’s about the pursuit of empowerment and action. The action I have taken, based on the research I have done, is what has helped me to heal myself in many different ways, including recovering from a pretty bad injury, drastically reducing a worryingly high fasting insulin level (I guess you could say I’ve been ‘pre-diabetic’) and just helping me get my general health & wellbeing back on track.
It’s about sharing what helped me lose a whole lot of excess weight, the healthy way and how I continue to keep it off WITHOUT starving!
It’s about trying to find a balance and becoming more conscientious with everything I come into contact with in daily life: food; personal care; fitness; fashion; home-making and more.
It’s also NOT about being perfect, or being an extremist in any one thing. You’ll find a bit of everything here, because I believe variety really is the spice of life and I enjoy a little of most things, while keeping mostly to what’s good for me. For example, the food sections and recipes of this blog covers many ‘diet’ preferences: Raw, Vegan, Vegetarian, Paleo (meat-free recipes only), Sugar-free, Dairy-free, Wheat-free, All Grain/Gluten-free and so on.
It’s about attempting to make better choices. Choices which make us feel good from the inside out. Like eating more fresh, locally grown, organic produce. Choosing to buy non-toxic personal and home care products (or making your own!). Supporting markets, small vendors and small business owners and buying fair-trade and socially conscious consumables and wares.
It’s about doing all these things while still being able to have fun and enjoy life. You’ve gotta live a little. Being too strict and stressing out because you’re putting too much pressure on yourself can also be unhealthy. Parties, special occasions, traveling and other situations don’t always allow you to have choices, so allow yourself to be good most of the time, and little bad sometimes.
“Fresh Life Journeys explores what we eat, drink, think, breathe, absorb, wear, consume, affect, do, use, buy, make and create
– so that we might make better, healthier choices,
not only for ourselves, but for the planet too”
What does Fresh Life Journeys mean to me?
Renewing our life force with anything and everything: organic and wholesome;
authentic and inspiring; and fun and exciting!
Our unique and individual explorations, discoveries and adventures!
What I aim to share with you:
♥ I aim to share valuable information you will actually use.
Information that is vital for motivation and will help you make your own positive, lasting changes for your health and well being. Information I hope will inspire you to create, begin or add to your own unique Fresh Life Journeys.
♥ I aim to share easy, home-made recipes for deliciously healthy clean-eating, and wholesome living.
I am a terrible cook and never had much talent in the kitchen, so if I can make it then you definitely can make it too! I go for mostly simple, quick to make (but tasty) recipes, always and am love discovering more raw but totally delicious recipes.
♥ I aim to share personally tried and tested solutions and inspiring ideas for a healthier lifestyle.
I just love discovering practical tips, useful solutions, and money saving ideas and really enjoy creating how-to’s and actionable steps to help others easily benefit from those discoveries. I really try to make them easy to implement and am always working on stuff I feel will genuinely help you make the kinds of lasting, positive changes you’ve been looking for, for optimum health and wellbeing.
♥ I aim to share valuable, credible, well-researched information, always, and delivering it in a way that is hopefully not too overwhelming.
Information overload = overwhelming! I have myself read and researched a lot of information. There is so much of it out there which tends to feel very overwhelming at the best of times. It takes a lot of time to sift through what is quality, well-researched information and understand what really turns out to be poor quality, unsubstantiated information that has just been spun out of thin air or based on hear-say, alone. I’ve tried to find all the best information, from the most credible sources (you will always see my references and resources for all information you find on this website) so that you can rely on the integrity of the information, knowing it can be traced as close back to it’s original, credible source as possible. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like further information on anything you find here on Fresh Life Journeys.
♥ I aim to share practical tips, easy how-to’s and actionable steps by developing real-world lifestyle guides to help you truly utilise this valuable information.
Eye-opening information WITHOUT a solution = overwhelm! A lot of information can be overwhelming purely because you just don’t know what to do with it. Some of it can be quite shocking. Then you are just left feeling helpless and end up pushing it out of your mind because you don’t know how to change it. During much of my research, it always frustrated me to find important, health-related information but then just felt like I was ‘left hanging’, without any ideas, suggestions or ways to solve, overcome or deal with that information. One of the biggest motivators for me starting Fresh Life Journeys was to help others find both the information and solutions all in one place. For those who don’t have the time I’ve spent finding and putting it all together. My aim has always been to share vitally important information that affects all of our health and wellbeing, but to always try and ensure it is accompanied by suggestions, proposed solutions, ideas and alternatives that have worked for me or inspired me into positive action.
My Promise to you.
When I share information and research, I will always try to offer positive solutions, healthy alternatives, handy solutions and actionable tips based on my personal research and experiences, in order for it to come from the most authentic place possible. I will continue to work hard to make sure that this blog and the information you find on this website is of the best quality, so that this quickly becomes a place that you feel offers the kind of positive thoughts and perspectives, real life examples, delicious recipes and valuable resources that you can use to help empower you on your journey to create your healthiest you.
Please remember to read my disclaimer: the sharing of my experiences is for information purposes only and should not be construed as advice of any kind, especially not to be taken as medical advice. About me… the short version!
There is a longer version – My Story
♥ I was born and grew up in South Africa.
♥ I studied after I finished school, and then left South Africa and worked on cruise ships for almost 7 years: first as a Massage Therapist, and Skin Specialist and then as an Art Auctioneer. I even became a Scuba Diver Instructor along the way.
♥ I’ve been living in Brisbane with my partner, Jay, in his homeland Australia since 2008 (we met on ships).
♥ Traveling and adventure, kiteboarding, eating, having fun and being merry are our favourite things.
♥ I should really change my middle name to Coconut – I love EVERYTHING to do with coconuts. In fact, I am surprised I don’t look like one by now the amount of coconut products I consume!
♥ I am a self confessed juicing addict – one of the guys at the Farmer’s market where I buy most our fresh food for the week actually calls me Carrot Lady – that would make me Samantha Coconut Carrot Lady Wyatt…
♥ Jay rivals my efforts in the kitchen, and makes the best home-made Quinoa Protein Bars in the world (such a healthy stud, who knew!)
♥ I am actually a terrible cook. We’re talking about good old fashion traditional cooking… yup, I’m useless at it. Which is why every recipe on my blog has been picked because it’s easy and if I can make it, absolutely anyone can.
♥ I am a thrifty gal – I don’t like to spend more than I need to on anything, unless I really have to. I don’t think you have to break the bank to be healthy and good to the planet. Sometimes certain things are worth saving pennies for though. If so, it has to be something I’ll use for a really long time. I research make, model and price before I buy, so that I will have the quality – enough to last as long as I want to use it for, AND I don’t end up spending more than I need to. I then share all of that research with you!
♥ I am no ‘one particular thing’: I can’t put myself into any one particular category i.e. Vegan, Paleo, Vegetarian, Raw-foodie, and so on. I enjoy a little of all these categories, and more. As long as it’s in moderation. There is definitely more of a focus here on fresh, organic, raw, and unprocessed whole-foods, particularly eating more of a plant based diet. You will see that reflected in the recipes and food sections. Based on my own research, I have significantly reduced consuming meat, dairy, grains, and processed foods – doesn’t mean I never eat them. We’re all human after all. Reducing these ingredients agrees with me (and my butt and waistline!) so it makes sense to me to keep them to a minimum.
♥ I love the world and really strive to reduce my carbon footprint in as many ways as possible and enjoy creativity and sustainability in all things. I get excited about anything repurposed, recreated, reused, recycled, vintage, home-made, home-grown, non-toxic, fair-trade, eco-friendly and organic.
These are my Values:
“Values are what’s really important to you in life. Values determine your priorities, and where you ultimate focus and attention lies. Deep down, your values are the measures to which you hold yourself accountable to.”
♥ I’m not perfect but I will always try to be my most authentic self.
What you see on my blog is all me: no copy and paste here… I do my own research and writing. I try, make, use, prepare, cook, eat, experiment and photograph my experiences and everything else myself, and then share it all here with you!
♥ I follow the 80/20 concept.
I used to only make healthier choices about 20% of the time (okay, truthfully maybe less), and the other 80% of the time, was treated with a “don’t worry about it” attitude. Now, it’s the other way around. I choose to make better, healthier choices regarding my health and wellness about 80% of the time (snaps for me!!) BUT there still, absolutely exists, that number 20% because sometimes it’s either harder to make those choices, for example like when you’re traveling or celebrating a special occasion or holiday….OR you just sometimes feel like not giving a hoot! Sometimes having fun and not being too hard on yourself is important too.
♥ I will make mistakes. I am human after all.
I’ve certainly made some bad choices in the past and done unhealthy things to my body. That’s life. I’ll probably make some bad choices for myself in the future too. We’re also all just human at the end of the day. We’re all not perfect, so don’t be too hard on yourself, don’t judge yourself or anyone else too harshly!
♥ Credible information and personal testimonials over hype any day.
It’s overwhelming out there, especially on the internet these days. So many conflicting opinions and opposing information. I choose to share information based on personal experience which comes from doing research and then giving things a try myself. I only follow and try information I research from reliable, well established, expert sources. Those sources can be doctors, experts and other professionals or successful, passionate individuals who have incredibly high values, and have well established bodies of work. I also only listen to those who practice what they ‘preach’ so to speak. I always try and list references and resources wherever possible so that you can trace what you read back to its original source. They are the doctors, experts, speakers, authors and leaders whose advice I trust, and whom I truly view as mentors on my quest for balance, health and longevity. I will share with you all my favourite books, documentaries, studies, testimonies, institutes and websites that I use for my all my own research and inspiration by listing references at the end of each blog post or web page.
♥ Do your own research. Make your own, well-informed decisions.
This is the reason why I make sure I include references to the resources I use, read, watch and learn from. Because, at the end of the day, don’t believe anything anyone tells you: do the research for yourself if you need to. There is nothing more empowering than learning and KNOWING something for yourself.
♥ Ignorance WAS bliss. Now I see and am inspired to be…
The right information can really change your life. My Jay and I always joke about wishing we didn’t keep learning about stuff sometimes, because once you really know the truth about certain things, well then it’s pretty hard to ignore it and not do something about it! I like this little fact a lot though. It means that when you are informed and you get inspired, you simply have no choice but to make positive changes. Therefore, the best motivator for positive, healthy, meaningful change comes from learning about and understanding ‘why’ for yourself (which is why I talked about doing your own research and confirming the credibility of anything you read).
“The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.” – Stephen Hawking.
